Our People

Formed in 2008 by Norman Richards, Richards Associates have a wealth of experience in the rapidly developing fields of Environmental and Sustainability related issues.

Our staff and associate have a combined experience working with leading manufacturers of concrete building materials of over 120 years.

The team is led by:

Norman Richards (Managing Director)

Specialist Knowledge - Environmental and Responsible Sourcing Management Systems; Environmental legislation; Provider of Training courses and advisor on Life Cycle Analysis and analysis and reporting of KPI data.

Norman has spent over 30 years working within the manufacturing industry and some 15 years, working with trade associations to help promote technical and environmental excellence within the industry. Before setting up RA consultancy, Norman was Head of Health, Safety and Environment within a leading manufacturer of roofing and cladding products.

Norman graduated with a BSc (Hon) science degree at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and then went on to gain an MSc in pollution control techniques, at Aston University.

During his career, he has gained a NEBOSH specialist diploma in Environmental Management, two NEEBOSH Diplomas ( i.e. levels 1 and 2) in Health and Safety and has attended and met the criteria to be a Lead Assessor in Quality, Environment and Health and Safety.

Norman has been responsible for developing management systems at a large number of manufacturing sites during the past 30 years, resulting in Quality, Environmental and H&S systems being independently certified by various UKAS accredited certification bodies.

Norman has developed excellent auditing, training and communication skills throughout his career and is often described as an individual who can communicate with ease at Board and shop-floor level, ensuring that complex issues are translated into understandable concepts.

Since starting RA consultancy, Norman has widened his experience into other “non-concrete” manufacturing industries, but still concentrates on promoting the use of management systems to help companies gain competitive advantage and efficiency savings, whilst at the same time, meeting the ever-growing demands of architects / specifiers within the industry

Trevor Grounds (Associate)

Specialist Knowledge - Sustainability strategy development and implementation, management of responsible sourcing (BES 6001 in particular), environmental data collection and analysis, concrete materials and mix development.

Trevor has spent the last 25 years in the construction products industry working in technical, research and development and sustainability management roles with major product manufacturers. He has been involved in a range of projects that span the whole supply chain and life cycle of building products from mineral extraction to recycling of demolition waste.

Graduating from the University of Salford in 1979 with a BSc (Hons) in construction management and technology, Trevor developed an interest in materials science and went on to complete a PhD relating to cement chemistry in 1985.

Applying the analytical skills obtained during his education, Trevor has spent a large part of his working life involved in process, materials and product development, with a particular interest in finding beneficial uses for by-product, recycled and waste materials.

A keen interest in environmental issues led him into key roles championing sustainable development both within his company and at trade association level. His latest role before becoming an associate of RA was to play a key part in the development of the sustainability strategy and reporting of a national manufacturer and the implementation of the strategy within its largest subsidiary company. The full range of the company’s products was certified to BES 6001 at the Very Good level during 2010.

At the trade association level Trevor has played an active part in promoting sustainable development through being Chair of both the Aircrete Products Association Technical Committee and the British Precast Sustainability and Environment Committee and co-chair of the Sustainable Concrete Forum Research and Life Cycle Analysis Group. He also co-chaired the working group that developed the Concrete Industry Guidance to meeting BES 6001.

Trevor is also registered with the BSI Associate Consultant Program, member number 324.

Glenn Rowe (Associate)

Specialist Knowledge - Health & Safety and Environmental Management .

Glenn formed an independent consultancy, Arbour Safety Management - HSE Management in 2005. Glenn is a well respected health & safety professional and Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner who has considerable success within all aspects of safety, health and environmental management, for in excess of 20years. His experience has been gained within a diverse range of industries and across all sections of business levels, from Boardroom to the shop floor.

As an Associate of RA, Glenn is able to work on projects where Health and Safety management systems need to be developed and implemented in an integrated approach with other systems such as Quality, Environment and Responsible Sourcing of Materials. Glenn is a firm believer that effective H&S management within a company can lead to improved bottom-line performance.

Alan Cooper (Associate)

Specialist Knowledge - Concrete mix designs for both structural and architectural applications including self compacting concrete, uses of sustainable cement and aggregate replacements, concrete additives to improve performance and cost saving, Green Guide and BREAAM concrete mix compliance. Batching plant design.

Following studying Engineering at City University, Alan has worked in the building materials manufacturing, construction and quarrying industries for over 30 years and latterly has held the role of Senior Concrete Technologist for the precast concrete subsidiary of a major construction company.

During his career, Alan has developed niche expertise in compliant cost effective concrete mix designs including high strength concrete. These can contain high proportions of secondary and recycled materials, using additives to achieve suitability for precast applications. Alan can particularly respond to specifications which refer to BREAAM for their sustainability credentials.

His concrete designs are featured in numerous award winning high profile buildings in London and around the country. Alan can advise on the design requirements and suitability of concrete batching plants to achieve the exacting standards of modern concrete mixing.

At Trade Association level Alan has been chairman of the BPCF Sustainability and Enviromment Committee and is a member of the Concrete Society London and South East Committee where he organises their training days.

Andrew Richards (Associate)

Specialist Knowledge - Technical Illustration, CAD services, Desk-top publishing and IT support.

Andrew joined RA as an Associate in 2008 and brings many artistic and IT skills to the team. Originally gaining a degree in Technical Illustration at Blackpool & Fylde University, Andrew worked as an illustrator for a number of companies before deciding to study Architecture at the University of Nottingham.

Now, as a fully qualified Architect, Andrew divides his time between working as an Architect and also as an Associate of RA, where he uses his skills and talents to produce imaginative “Process Flow Charts”, site pamphlets and plans etc, which can be used to support companies with their promotional and training literature.

Christopher Richards (Associate)

Specialist Knowledge - 3D CAD Modelling, Vector Illustration, Desktop publishing, Web Design, Databases/ Data analysis, General Graphic Design

Chris Joined us in July 2012, he brings a great deal of I.T skills to the team and works part time whilst studying Mechanical Engineering at Bristol University.

Marie Dalgaard (Associate)

Specialist Knowledge – Environmental Engineering, Water and wastewater services, and data analysis.

Marie graduated from Aalborg University, Denmark holding a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Environmental engineering. She went on to earn a M.Sc. in Water Resources Technology and Management from University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Marie’s main interests are water, waste water and efficiency improvement within the environmental sector. She has experience within the water industry and has dealt with areas such as water distribution networks, discharge of wastewater and flooding. She also has working knowledge of the agricultural sector.

Her most recently work was with a main water utility company in the Midlands, where she applied her skills to successfully complete a project concerning pressure management in the water distribution network.

She is a member of IDA (Danish Society of Engineers).

Paul Slater(Associate)

Specialist Knowledge – Development of sustainability strategy and implementation, integrated environmental management systems and management of responsible sourcing.

Paul has spent the last 20 years implementing and managing environmental and sustainable programmes at both the organisation and industry level. Most recently this has involved the entire construction supply chain in developing and implementing the Concrete Industry Sustainability programme to 2020.

Graduating from Manchester University in 1973, Paul has transitioned from product development, safety labelling and regulatory affairs at both UK and international levels to focus extensively on environmental management. Paul graduated at the MSc level at the University of Bath in “Integrated environmental management” in 2003. Paul continues to use his extensive experience to tutor new graduates in this course.

Paul has been involved in the development and piloting of environmental management systems in both small and large companies and this included the development of the responsible sourcing standards for the construction industry. Paul has spent a large part of his working life involved in using the integration of environmental management systems to improve the overall performance of an organisation.

At the trade association level Paul has played an active role in promoting the use of the concrete product life cycle in sustainable construction of the built environment. This has been in the development of sustainability standards and through sustainable building schemes such as BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Colin Marshall(Associate)

Specialist Knowledge – Quality Management Systems design and development, Sustainability issues for the construction industry, with a strong focus on responsible sourcing initiatives including overseeing certification to BES 6001, technical consultancy including product development, technical literature production, site complaint investigation, product failures, and materials evaluation and testing.

Colin has over 30 years experience in the construction products industry working in senior commercial and technical roles. During this time Colin has had responsibility for delivering technical services on behalf of major product manufacturers. Responsibilities have included providing technical advisory services, product development, implementing and improving ISO 9001 quality systems at a large number of locations, managing change imposed through building and environmental regulations as well as other types of legislation. He also has long experience of producing technical literature directed at construction professionals, and delivering product and technical based training to a diverse audience. He has been involved in a range of projects that span the whole supply chain and life cycle of building products from mineral extraction to recycling of production and demolition waste.

Recent successes have included leading companies through to BES 6001 responsible souring certification.

He has also been responsible for investigating and resolving a number of site complaints

Colin’ career encompasses employment with civil engineering, builder’s merchants and, for the major part, building product manufacturers.

Applying the skills and experience obtained during a varied career, Colin’s interest is in the practical dissemination of knowledge and processes to help companies to realise their objectives whilst applying a practical approach that fully takes account of the resources that are available.
