Environmental Management Systems - ISO 14001

In recent years, RA have received an increasing number of requests for information from manufacturers, on the subject of Environmental Management Systems (e.g. ISO 14001) and how independent certification to this standard can help demonstrate their Sustainability credentials

.

In certain cases, manufacturers are being told that future orders may depend on the supplier being able to obtain UKAS accreditation to ISO 14001, and it is therefore clear that in certain sectors, these issues are becoming a “must-have”, in tender documents, rather than “nice -to-have” credentials.

Architects, contractors and specifiers alike, are demanding that the materials used in their projects have minimum standards with regards to Quality, Environment, H&S and Sustainability, in order to gain points under BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes assessments.

It is also clear that the introduction of the Responsible Sourcing of Materials standard, BES 6001
in 2010, is resulting in companies needing to gain ISO 14001 certification in order to obtain a “Very Good” ratings under the BES 6001 standard.

Companies often already have experience with Quality Assurance schemes (e.g. ISO 9001) but lack the in-house knowledge and experience to implement ISO 14001 without some outside assistance.
